Am I Too Old for This? How I Stopped Questioning My Worth at 40+

At 43 and pregnant, I asked myself "am I too old for this?" every single day. Here is what changed — and what I wish someone had told me from the start.

I remember lying in bed at 3am, my hand resting on my belly, asking myself the same question for the hundredth time.

Am I too old for this?

At 43, newly pregnant, I felt a strange mix of joy and fear. Part of me was thrilled. Another part kept scrolling through statistics, reading about geriatric pregnancies, comparing myself to women who had done this ten years earlier.

Here is what I eventually learned. The question itself was the problem.

Why This Question Is So Hard to Shake

The moment you tell people you are pregnant over 40, the reactions begin. Some are warm. Many come with raised eyebrows, concerned warnings, and statistics you did not ask for.

Society has a very clear idea of when pregnancy is supposed to happen. And 40 is not in that window.

So the question takes root. And every appointment, every Google search, every comment from a well-meaning friend waters it.

But here is what that question is actually doing: it is measuring your experience against someone else's timeline. And that is not a fair measure of anything.

The Loneliness Nobody Talks About

There is something specific about pregnancy over 40 that most people do not mention.

You are often the oldest in the room.

In the waiting room. At the antenatal class. In the WhatsApp group where everyone else seems to be ten years younger and moving through this with a completely different frame of reference.

That loneliness is real. Not because you are doing something wrong. But because you are doing something that most people around you have not done — or did differently, at a different time, with a different set of experiences.

You are not out of step. You are just on a different path. And that path needs its own support.

"Is It Selfish to Have a Baby at 43?"

Let's say it out loud — because plenty of women over 40 have thought it, even if nobody admits it.

Is this selfish?

The honest answer is: no.

Wanting to give life, wanting to be present, wanting to do this well — that is not selfishness. That is love, showing up before this baby has even arrived.

The Moment That Changed Everything

My shift did not come from a reassuring conversation or a perfect appointment.

It came from sitting with the question long enough to actually look at it.

When I stopped running from "am I too old for this?" and started asking what it was really about — I realised I had been treating my age as evidence against myself. Every statistic, every label — I had been collecting them as proof that I was doing something wrong.

But when I looked at what was actually in front of me — my health, my clarity, what I knew about myself, what I had already built — the story changed.

I was not doing something wrong. I was taking on the life that had been given to me. The life that had chosen me as a mother.

My body was doing exactly what this baby needed — whether I noticed it or not.

And I was doing it with more life experience, more emotional honesty, and more self-knowledge than I had ever had.

What Actually Helps

The question — am I too old for this — does not go away by finding more information. It goes away by grounding.

When you are grounded, the question gets quieter. You stop measuring yourself against a timeline that was never yours. You hear yourself again. You connect to what is actually happening — not to what a statistic implies.

That shift does not happen all at once. It happens in small moments. A breath. A decision to put the phone down. A quiet minute with your hand on your belly and nothing else.

That is where trust starts to build.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me

You are not too old. You are not too late. You are not a statistic.

You are a woman bringing life into the world with experience, strength, and self-knowledge that only comes with time. Your age is not the problem. It never was.

Doubt will visit. That is normal. What matters is that you do not let it make the decisions.
